This week, the city of College Station, Texas, approved an ordinance banning big street parking city-wide.

During a March 28 meeting, College Station City Council members voted to approve a city-wide truck parking ban.

City officials say that they moved forward with the truck parking ban due to complaints from residents, who say that trucks park on the streets for weeks or months, creating safety concerns. The city received 37 complaints about truck parking between January 1,2022 and March 1,2024.

The ordinance would prohibit the parking of a commercial vehicle on any city street. The ordinance defines commercial vehicle as “a motor vehicle or combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, including a towed unit with a gross vehicle weight or a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds; or has a gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds.”

KBTX reports that the city will not enforce the parking ban for at least six months. The city plans to spend several months spreading awareness about the new parking ordinance with the trucking community before taking enforcement action.

Prior to the passage of the ordinance, truck parking was banned on certain streets in residential areas.

City officials point to several truck stops in the nearby area that truckers can use for parking, including:

  • Big Gas Truck Stop [2818 and Hwy 6. North of Bryan]
  • Hwy 21 Truck Stop
  • Circle T/Aggieland Truck Stop
  • Chevron [Barron @ Hwy 6 frontage road]
