A truck driver was arrested after fleeing police during a routine traffic stop in Iowa on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened on May 5th near Walnut, Iowa.

According to ABC 7 News, a trooper attempted to pull over the semi truck for a traffic stop west of Adair on Interstate 80 but the truck driver drove away, so the officer took chase.

Eventually, the pursuit reached speeds of up to 90mph and police deployed stop sticks but the driver kept going, driving on rims along gravel roads.

“There were multiple stop stick deployments by other agencies and other departments as well as our own to try to deflate the tires on this vehicle so we could safely get him stopped on the interstate before something really bad happens,” said Ryan DeVault with the Iowa State Patrol.

“Dirt roads are very dusty,” DeVault continued. “I know I spoke with one of the troopers who was actively involved, and it was just times where you couldn’t see anything at all just because of the gravel dust.”

Eventually, the rig came to a stop and the driver was identified as Jeremy Samstad of St. James, Minnesota. Police then discovered the driver had multiple warrants from four different states, mostly involving forgery or theft, and his CDL was revoked.

“There’ll be multiple charges filed,” DeVault said. “Eluding, I know is one. He had multiple stop sign violations, having no electronic log in the truck and then also his license was revoked from driving.”

The driver has since been taken into custody.
