NTSB Sets Meeting to Determine Cause of Fatal 2023 Bus Crash Involving Parked Semi Trucks in Illinois

HIGHLAND, Ill. — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced it will hold a public board meeting on May 20, 2025, to determine the probable cause of a deadly crash involving a Greyhound bus and three parked semi trucks at an Illinois rest area nearly two years ago.
The fatal crash occurred on July 12, 2023, when a Greyhound motorcoach traveling westbound on Interstate 70, en route from Indianapolis to St. Louis, left the highway at the westbound Silver Lake rest area near mile marker 27.4. The bus collided with three semi trucks that were parked along the right shoulder of the rest area’s exit ramp.
The crash resulted in the deaths of three bus passengers, with the bus driver and the remaining passengers sustaining injuries ranging from minor to serious. The three truck drivers, who were inside their vehicles at the time of the incident, were not injured.
Officials highlighted that the Silver Lake rest area provides 64 total parking spaces, 21 of which are specifically designated for commercial trucks, including one space designated as a commercial truck handicap spot.
During the upcoming board meeting, the NTSB will determine the probable cause of the crash and aims to issue safety recommendations intended to prevent similar accidents in the future.
