OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A truck driver was trapped inside his cab early Wednesday morning after crashing through a Starbucks in Oceanside, California, following a medical emergency.

The incident occurred just before 4:45 a.m. on May 7 at the Starbucks located on North Coast Highway near State Route 76. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the driver experienced a medical event, ran a red light, and drove directly into the side of the building.

The crash caused major structural damage to the Starbucks and left one employee injured. Complicating rescue efforts, an active electrical hazard at the crash site prevented emergency responders from reaching the trapped driver immediately. Power to the building had to be cut off before crews could safely extract him from the cab.

Both the truck driver and the injured employee were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials confirmed.

“We are grateful that no serious injuries occurred, considering the scale of the incident,” the Oceanside Fire Department said in a statement. “The coordinated efforts of our crews, the Oceanside Police Department, and SDG&E ensured a rapid and safe response.”

The Starbucks location has been declared unsafe pending a full structural evaluation.
