CRESCENT JUNCTION, Utah — A semi-truck driver was killed Sunday night when another truck made an illegal re-entry onto Interstate 70, causing a deadly rear-end collision near milepost 181, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. on July 6, when the driver of a 2024 Freightliner exited eastbound I-70 at a scenic overlook. Instead of re-entering the highway properly, the driver attempted to cut back onto I-70 eastbound by crossing the gore area — a restricted zone between the exit ramp and main lanes.

As the 2024 Freightliner merged back into traffic, it was rear-ended by a 2015 Freightliner hauling a trailer. Authorities confirmed the driver of the 2015 Freightliner died on impact. The victim’s name has not been released.

The 2024 Freightliner’s trailer, which was carrying blueberries, was destroyed. The front of the 2015 Freightliner sustained severe damage. The driver and passenger in the 2024 truck were not injured.

According to KUTV, the Grand County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the crash to determine if charges will be filed.

Cleanup and investigation lasted five to six hours, with eastbound traffic rerouted through a nearby rest area during the closure.
