Box Truck Stopped by Catchnet System After Losing Brakes on Teton Pass

A box truck lost its brakes while descending Teton Pass on July 17, 2025, and was successfully stopped by the catchnet truck arrestor system, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).
The incident occurred on WYO 22, where the truck driver used four of the steel cable nets before the vehicle came to a full stop. Officials reported that the driver suffered only minor injuries.
The catchnet system—similar to what’s used to stop jet planes on aircraft carriers—uses 8 to 10 cable nets and energy-absorbing tape canisters to safely decelerate runaway trucks. WYDOT said the design allows the system to function in areas where traditional runaway ramps aren’t feasible, eliminating the need for trucks to cross opposing traffic to reach a safety lane.
The Teton Pass arrestor system has proven effective multiple times and is considered one of the most important safety installations on this steep stretch of highway.
According to Buckrail, repairs are underway and the system is expected to be operational again by the end of the day.
