One Dead, Several Injured After Chain-Reaction Crash Involving 10 Vehicles on I-81 in Virginia

A 36-year-old man is dead and multiple others injured following a massive chain-reaction crash involving six tractor-trailers, a medical transport van, and three passenger vehicles on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County, Virginia.
According to WSET News, the crash occurred on Thursday, September 26th, near the 181 mile marker, during heavy rain conditions. Virginia State Police (VSP) said traffic was slowing due to a two-vehicle crash when vehicles began rear-ending one another, blocking the roadway and triggering the large-scale pileup.
In total, 10 vehicles were involved, including:
-
6 tractor-trailers
-
3 passenger vehicles
-
1 medical transport van (which was not carrying any patients)
The person who died was identified as Abdiqadir Ahmed Nur, 36, of Minnesota. He was in the last vehicle to collide, which struck multiple tractor-trailers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the medical van sustained serious injuries. A helicopter was initially dispatched for transport, but due to poor weather conditions, the individual was instead transported by ground to a hospital in Rockbridge County.
Other injuries reported were non-life-threatening, according to VSP.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities continue to piece together the sequence of impacts. Wet conditions and reduced visibility are believed to have played a major role in the incident.
