LEWISTON, N.Y. — A computer system failure caused significant delays and disruptions at two key New York–Canada border crossings, halting commercial truck traffic for nearly two days.

The issue began late on Monday, September 29th, at both the Peace Bridge near Buffalo and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge near Lewiston. According to WGRZ, the disruption was caused by a failed system update, leaving border officers unable to process commercial vehicles.

With “no way of checking” trucks entering Canada, thousands of drivers were stranded, and massive traffic backups formed along Interstate 190 North near both crossings. By early Wednesday morning, October 1st, commercial processing resumed, though operations remained slower than usual.

According to Audacy, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued a statement at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday saying:

“The outage has now been fully resolved. Commercial drivers may continue to experience some short-term delays as we resume normal processing.”

Both the Peace Bridge and Lewiston-Queenston Bridge are now fully operational, but the event highlighted vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure supporting international trade routes.
