MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A trucking and concrete company has been fined tens of thousands of dollars after firing a female driver because management claimed the job was not “women’s work.”

According to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR), Lakes Concrete Plus was ordered to pay $45,000 in damages for wrongful termination and gender-based discrimination. The fine follows an investigation into allegations of sexual stereotyping and workplace discrimination.

The unnamed woman told investigators that a manager at Lakes Concrete Plus fired her from her position as a concrete truck driver, telling her to find a “more fitting” job for her gender. After filing a complaint, the state determined the company had violated Minnesota’s Human Rights Act.

According to KSTP News, in addition to the fine, Lakes Concrete Plus must implement anti-discrimination reforms and training to ensure equal employment opportunities. The settlement funds will go directly to the affected former employee, according to 5 ABC / KSTP News.
