One person is dead after an excavator fell off a semi truck and rolled down an embankment in California on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred on September 1st at around 4:21 p.m. in Nipomo, California on the northbound side of Highway 101.

According to Cal Fire public affairs officer Adan Orozco, “a big-rig vehicle that had an excavator on the trailer made contact with the guardrail for unknown reasons. The excavator left that trailer, rolled down the embankment onto the off-ramp at Willow Road and it landed on top of the SUV.”

The force of the 30 foot drop sent the excavator crashing into the SUV with such force that it killed the motorist inside. Another vehicle was also damaged in the fall, but that motorist was not injured, reported The Tribune.

The incident is still under investigation and it is not clear what citations, if any, have been issued.
