JEFFERSON, Ga. — The truck driver charged in connection with a fiery crash on Interstate 85 that killed eight people from the same family has been released on bond, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said 33-year-old Kane Hammock was released Thursday after posting an $83,000 bond. He faces multiple charges, including eight counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree vehicular feticide, following too closely, distracted driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid plate, according to Atlanta News First.

The deadly crash occurred Monday when a tractor-trailer driven by Hammock struck a Dodge Grand Caravan, causing it to burst into flames. Seven people in the van were pronounced dead at the scene, and an eighth victim was later found at the crash site, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Family members identified the victims as Kenia Ramirez, Darwin Ventura, and their child Kayle, along with Sonia Maribel Ramirez (Kenia’s mother) and her children Justin, Andy, Natali, and Evan. The family also confirmed that one of the victims was pregnant.

Hammock remains under investigation as authorities continue to review evidence from the crash.
