MORGAN COUNTY, Utah — A semi-truck carrying potassium-based fertilizer rolled over Tuesday on Interstate 84 in Weber Canyon, spilling gallons of material onto the highway. The crash is one of 23 similar incidents reported near the same stretch of road since 2020, according to local fire officials.

“It’s pretty crazy that 23 of these things have happened about a mile-and-a-half from my house,” said Mountain Green Fire Protection District Chief Brian Brendel. “That’s an extraordinary amount of rolled-over semis.”

The curve at milepost 90 on westbound I-84 has become a recurring problem spot for truck drivers. “We’ve been very fortunate — it’s been cute, it’s been funny, because on some occasions it’s beer, hay, soda pop,” Brendel said. “But one of these days, it’s going to be much worse.”

According to FOX 13 News, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) currently enforces a lower truck speed limit of 55 mph through the area, compared to 65 mph for passenger vehicles. UDOT spokesperson Miles Shaw said the department is exploring additional safety measures. “There’s a river and mountains on either side of the road, so we’re really constrained in what we can do,” Shaw said. “After this last crash, we’ll analyze the location to see if we can add more signage or possibly flashing warning signs.”

Rollover crashes in the canyon often lead to lengthy delays and safety risks for first responders. “The westbound lanes are separated by the Weber River from the eastbound lanes,” Brendel explained. “If something goes wrong with hazardous materials, we can’t just flip around and escape. Some of this stuff is pretty scary.”

Brendel urged drivers to take extra caution through the canyon. “We can’t just ignore it; we need help,” he said. “We want to make sure nothing tragic happens here. It’s a safety issue that’s paramount for me.”
