PHOENIX, Ariz. — Two people were hospitalized early Monday after a red SUV fleeing a hit-and-run on Interstate 10 crashed into two semi-trucks at the intersection of 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street, causing the vehicle to catch fire and shutting down the roadway for hours.

The incident began on I-10, where Arizona DPS troopers were investigating a hit-and-run crash. Moments later, the same SUV exited the freeway and continued at high speed into the West Valley, according to ABC15. At approximately 4 a.m., the SUV collided with two semi-trucks in the intersection. Video from the scene showed the SUV completely mangled, with its front end crushed beneath one of the trucks.

Phoenix Police confirmed the SUV burst into flames after the impact, and officers arriving on scene found the vehicle heavily damaged and smoking. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and pulled the driver — described only as a man — from the SUV. He was rushed to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, according to AZFamily.

One of the semi-truck drivers, also a man, was transported to a hospital as a precaution. The second truck driver was not reported injured. DPS says no one was hurt in the initial freeway hit-and-run.

Investigators from multiple agencies — DPS, Phoenix Police, and Phoenix Fire — remained on scene for hours documenting debris, skid marks, and vehicle positions. The intersection of 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street is expected to remain closed for an extended period due to the severity of the crash, according to FOX10 Phoenix.

Authorities have not released details about the hit-and-run the SUV driver was fleeing, nor whether impairment, excessive speed, or reckless driving are suspected. DPS confirmed both crashes are directly connected and remain under active investigation.
