RAWLINS, Wyo. — A semi-truck driver is in custody after allegedly opening fire on a pickup truck during a road rage incident along Interstate 80 east of Rawlins, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The confrontation began near mile marker 236, where investigators say a Ram pickup was passing a westbound semi when the truck driver brandished a firearm and fired multiple rounds out of his driver-side window at the pickup.

A witness in another vehicle immediately called the incident in to authorities.

The pickup driver managed to keep the semi in sight and safely exited the highway at mile marker 215, pulling into the Rawlins WYDOT office to meet responding troopers. Officers confirmed a bullet hole in the pickup’s front passenger door and later learned that a child was seated in the back seat at the time of the shooting. No injuries were reported.

Using witness descriptions, troopers located the suspect semi-truck near mile marker 190. A probable cause search uncovered a firearm and two spent rounds inside the cab, and the driver was taken into custody. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says 40 road rage incidents on Wyoming highways so far in 2025 have involved firearms, aggressive driving or threats — part of a total of 130 road rage calls statewide this year.

Authorities urge drivers to avoid engaging with aggressive motorists and to immediately call law enforcement if threatened.
