CHARLTON, Massachusetts — A crash involving two tractor-trailers shut down lanes on the Massachusetts Turnpike early Sunday morning, sending one person to the hospital and prompting an environmental response.

According to the Charlton Fire Department, the collision happened around 6 a.m. on I-90 eastbound near mile marker 84.5, where firefighters found both semi-trucks heavily damaged and leaking fuel.

One individual suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to UMass Trauma Center. Two lanes were immediately closed as emergency crews managed a significant fuel spill, which also triggered a notification to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

Traffic backups stretched for miles as crews worked the scene. Drivers were urged to slow down, move over, and stay alert while passing responders.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials expect delays in the area until cleanup and assessments are fully complete.
