The semi was hauling a dump truck at the time of the crash. Following the collision, the semi became disabled on the roadway with a broken axle and a fuel leak, making removal difficult and requiring an extended cleanup effort. The impact also downed powerlines, and officials said the semi-truck may have been energized, leading public utility crews to secure the scene.

Traffic on SR 104 was fully closed for a period so tow operators could remove the dump truck that had been carried by the semi. Crews later opened the Hood Canal Bridge to one-way alternating traffic, but significant delays remained as responders continued working to remove the damaged semi and clear spilled fuel.
