DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA — Police said speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in a Sunday evening crash on Interstate 85 in Durham that left one person dead after a Dodge Challenger hit the back of a tractor-trailer.

Durham police said officers were called just before 6:15 p.m. to reports of a crash on Interstate 85 southbound near Exit 176. Police also said the crash happened around 6:10 p.m. on Interstate 85 south near Exit 176.

When officers arrived, police said they found a Dodge Challenger had crashed into the back of a Freightliner tractor-trailer. Police identified the Dodge Challenger driver as Alfredo Sanchez Soto, 32, of Durham. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said an investigation determined Soto was traveling south on Interstate 85 in a 2015 Dodge Challenger when he rear-ended a 2025 Freightliner. Police said speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

Interstate 85 was reduced to one lane for about five hours, police said. All lanes were reopened just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. As of Monday, police said no charges have been filed.

Anyone with information about the moments leading up to the crash is asked to contact Investigator A. Roberts at 984-259-4550, or submit an anonymous tip through CrimeStoppers at durhamcrimestoppers.org, or by calling 919-683-1200. Police said CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards up to $2,000 for any tip that leads to an arrest in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.
