40,000 Pounds of Metal Beams Spill Across I-95 After Box Truck Crash Triggers Tractor-Trailer Rollover in Richmond
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA — A crash involving a box truck and a tractor-trailer caused major delays on Interstate 95 in downtown Richmond Monday morning after the tractor-trailer overturned and spilled approximately 40,000 pounds of steel or aluminum beams across all southbound lanes near the Belvidere Street exit, forcing lane closures during the morning rush.

Virginia State Police said troopers responded at 6:39 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, to a crash in the southbound lanes of I-95 near the Belvidere Street exit in Richmond, near mile marker 76.
Police said preliminary information indicates the box truck struck the center Jersey wall and came to rest against it. As a result of the crash, police said the tractor-trailer overturned.

Virginia State Police said the tractor-trailer was transporting approximately 40,000 pounds of steel or aluminum beams, which spilled across all southbound lanes. Images from the scene showed a crashed truck in the median of the interstate.

As of reporting, officials said all southbound lanes were closed near Belvidere Street as crews worked to clear the roadway and safely remove the spilled metal beams. Southbound lanes remained closed through the morning rush hour while crews continued the cleanup. The crash also closed multiple southbound and northbound lanes near the Belvidere Street exit, according to reports.

Police said the driver of the box truck was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
