MIMS, FLORIDA — A traffic incident responder working to clear a vehicle fire on Interstate 95 Monday morning was killed after being struck by a semi-truck in the northbound lanes near mile marker 228 in Mims, Brevard County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened just after 9:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 228. Investigators said the incident involved a semi-truck with a trailer and a CMTI traffic incident response truck that was on scene assisting with a vehicle fire.

FHP said the CMTI truck was parked in the outside lane with its arrow board and lights activated for an incident ahead. Investigators said the 63-year-old semi-truck driver failed to slow or move over and is accused of hitting the CMTI driver. FHP said the impact caused both vehicles to collide with the outside shoulder guardrail.

The semi-truck driver, an Orlando man, was not injured and stayed at the scene, FHP said. The driver of the CMTI truck, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the CMTI truck, a 42-year-old man from Saint Cloud, was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officials said some lanes have since reopened in the area. Authorities also said a separate crash, unrelated to the earlier incidents on I-95, shut down all the southbound lanes, but southbound lanes have since reopened.

The circumstances leading up to the fatal crash remain under investigation. According to WESH.
