PACOIMA, CALIFORNIA — A crash involving two FedEx big rigs scattered packages and shut down all lanes of northbound Interstate 5 in the San Fernando Valley early Wednesday, causing major delays across multiple freeways as crews worked to clear the damaged trucks.

The collision was reported around 3:45 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway just south of the 118 Freeway in Pacoima. The crash left one trailer split open and a cab blocking the middle lanes, with packages scattered across the roadway.

Authorities have not said what caused the crash, but it happened shortly after heavy rain began falling in Los Angeles County. It was also unclear whether anyone was injured.

The incident prompted officials to issue a SigAlert for the closure of all northbound lanes, leading to heavy delays on the 5, 118, and nearby 405 freeways. The SigAlert was initially expected to end at 6:30 a.m., but it was extended for another five hours at 5:43 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

A heavy-duty tow truck was called to remove the big rigs as the closure continued.

The National Weather Service said 4 to 7 inches of rain were expected to fall in Valley areas through Friday.

The investigation into what led to the crash remains ongoing.
