SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — A semi-truck hauling a 53-foot trailer shut down both lanes of Highway 46 Monday morning after the driver attempted a U-turn near the Cholame Y interchange, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the incident happened around 9:51 a.m. on Highway 46 just east of Highway 41, where the big rig ended up stuck across the roadway while trying to turn around. CHP’s Templeton Office reported the truck’s axles became lodged in the mud, leaving the trailer blocking traffic and requiring a heavy-duty tow to pull it out.

By 10:20 a.m., CHP said both lanes were closed, and drivers were told to expect delays and use alternate routes. CHP also warned motorists not to drive off the paved roadway while crews worked the scene.

CHP’s Templeton Office said the semi was cleared and both lanes reopened by 11:16 a.m.
