ST. GEORGE, UTAH — A commercial truck driver was killed Monday morning after a flatbed truck hauling construction supplies rolled over on northbound Interstate 15 near the Brigham Road exit in St. George, according to the Utah Highway Patrol and local reports.

The crash was reported around 6:51 a.m. near milepost 4, just north of the Brigham Road overpass, UHP said. Troopers reported a flatbed commercial Mack truck was traveling northbound carrying construction materials when it left the roadway in a curve.

UHP said the truck went off the freeway onto the soft shoulder, continued along the shoulder toward the Brigham Road northbound on-ramp (which sits at a lower elevation), and then rolled over in the dirt gore area between the on-ramp shoulder and I-15.

Authorities said the cab was crushed in the rollover and the 66-year-old male driver suffered fatal injuries. St. George Fire responded to extricate the driver, officials said.

Investigators said the cause of the truck leaving the roadway has not been determined. An accident reconstruction team was sent to conduct a crash investigation, as is standard in fatal crashes, officials said.

The northbound side of I-15 near the exit was initially shut down following the crash, then reduced to a single travel lane, prompting officers to divert traffic off the interstate onto Brigham Road, reports said. Officials also reported a secondary crash occurred during the backup just east of the Flying J gas station, with congestion stretching along Brigham Road in both directions and extending onto River Road, where northbound traffic was backed up for several miles.
