NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — A woman riding a bicycle was struck by a tractor-trailer at a busy Midtown intersection early Wednesday, suffering severe leg trauma and being taken to the hospital, according to police.

Police said the crash happened around 6:15 a.m. at Second Avenue and E. 57th Street when a 53-year-old truck driver operating a Rhode Island-plated tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Second Avenue and struck the 46-year-old cyclist while turning right onto E. 57th Street.

Investigators said it was not immediately clear whether the cyclist was also turning onto E. 57th Street or was already traveling on the crosstown roadway at the time of the collision.

Police initially reported the woman was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition with trauma to her leg, but later said her condition was stable.

A witness at the scene told reporters the woman’s leg appeared to have been severed; that account could not immediately be confirmed.

Records reviewed by the outlet reported the truck involved had been captured by city cameras for three speeding violations and one red-light violation since July 2023, though it was unclear whether the same driver was operating the truck in those instances.

City data cited in the report described the intersection as one of the city’s busiest, with eight reported crashes there last year and 69 crashes over the past five years, including injuries to cyclists and pedestrians.

The incident remains under investigation.
