When crews opened the rear of the trailer, they found the load — 40,000 pounds of pinto beans stored in plastic tote bags — and determined the cleanup would take several hours.

Officials credited Dykhuis Farms for supplying a tractor, vacuum, and hoses to help transfer the beans into a dump trailer. Crews also thanked Reliable Road Service for assisting with removal of the semi and hauling away the spilled load, and Ottawa County Canteen Services for keeping responders fed and hydrated during the prolonged operation.
