Semi Rolls Over on I-85 North in Gaston County as Ice Storm Creates Hazardous Roads and Crews Clear Scene Overnight
GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA — A tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 85 northbound in Gaston County Sunday afternoon, forcing a temporary closure as icy winter weather created hazardous driving conditions, according to NCDOT and local officials.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the crash shut down I-85 North near mile marker 17, impacting the stretch between Exit 20 (New Hope Road / North Hope Church Road area) and Exit 17 (US-321). The incident was reported just before 4 p.m., with traffic redirected at the exit while crews worked the scene.

Officials said the shutdown extended into the night, with lanes clearing overnight/after midnight once the overturned truck was removed and the roadway was made safe.
The Gastonia Police Department said the semi overturned while traveling through hazardous road conditions linked to the ice storm. No injuries were reported, and drivers were urged to avoid the area during the closure.
NCDOT noted traffic volumes were lighter than normal as many motorists stayed off the roads due to winter storm conditions across the region.
