PLAINFIELD, Ind. — A crash involving an Indiana State Police trooper caused traffic backups on I-70 eastbound near Plainfield Thursday morning after a trooper’s patrol vehicle was hit while the trooper was already investigating a separate rollover crash, ISP said.

The crash was reported around 9:02 a.m. Thursday near the 60-mile marker on I-70 eastbound, about five miles west of Plainfield, between IN 39 and Center Street. The right lane was closed, leading to delays in the area.

In a later update, Indiana State Police said a trooper was working a rollover crash on I-70 eastbound when another vehicle spun out of control and struck the rear of the trooper’s patrol car. ISP said both the trooper and the other driver were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

ISP also noted the incident marked the sixth time in the last five days that an Indiana State Police vehicle has been struck on an interstate in the Indianapolis district.

“While most people were seeking shelter from the weather, our troopers were driving straight into it,” said ISP Indianapolis District Commander Josh Watson, praising troopers for responding through hazardous winter conditions. Watson also thanked the ISP Motor Carrier Division and additional troopers who assisted during the snowstorm response.
