GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Gaston County Police say more than $500,000 in cash believed to be tied to illegal drug activity was seized Tuesday, February 3, 2026, after K-9 officers stopped a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 for a traffic violation.

According to the Gaston County Police Department, officers with the K-9 Unit initiated the stop after observing the truck commit a violation. During the stop, officers interviewed the driver and conducted a K-9 sniff of the tractor-trailer. Police say the K-9 alerted to the odor of narcotics, prompting the department’s Special Investigations Unit to respond and assist.

Investigators say an extensive search of the trailer led detectives to a large amount of U.S. currency that was carefully concealed. The cash was reportedly packaged in numerous individual bundles, which police say is consistent with methods commonly used to hide large sums linked to drug trafficking and money laundering.

“Through strategic coordination and proactive investigations, the Gaston County Police Department remains committed to reducing the prevalence of dangerous drugs and combating criminal activity in our community,” the department stated, adding that the work supports its mission to keep Gaston County safer.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and due to the nature of the case, no further information is being released at this time. The department said photographs related to the incident were attached.
