DAVIE, Florida — A fuel tanker overturned and spilled thousands of gallons of fuel Wednesday morning following a crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 595, sending two truck drivers to the hospital and shutting down westbound lanes for hours.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the tanker truck rear-ended a van while traveling westbound on I-595 just east of the Davie Road Extension. The impact caused the tanker to roll onto its side, spilling the majority of its approximately 4,000-gallon load.

Officials said the tanker was carrying about 3,000 gallons of diesel and 1,000 gallons of gasoline.

Investigators said a semi-truck driver swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the overturned tanker but ended up colliding with both the tanker and another passenger vehicle.

Davie Fire Rescue confirmed that the drivers of both the fuel tanker and the semi-truck were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The crash forced the temporary shutdown of all westbound lanes of I-595 near Davie Road, with traffic rerouted to State Road 441. Several on-ramps east of Davie Road were also closed. By 3:15 p.m., three westbound lanes had reopened, though two lanes remained closed.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews worked to contain the hazardous spill after fuel reached the roadway drainage system. As of 2:45 p.m., the tanker had been uprighted while cleanup operations continued.

Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as crews worked to secure the scene.
