Investigators determined that the garbage truck and the e-bike were both traveling northeast on Kansas Avenue when they reached the intersection with Upshur Street at the same time. Authorities said the truck made a right turn onto Upshur Street, and the front right portion of the vehicle struck the e-bike.

The male rider, identified as Kenny Jimmenez Rivera, 26, of Northwest D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts failed. The female passenger was transported by D.C. Fire and EMS to a hospital with critical injuries, where she remains hospitalized.

Police said the garbage truck driver did not remain at the scene.

With assistance from the department’s Real Time Crime Center and video review, officers later located the trash truck in Hyattsville, Maryland. Detectives have since identified the driver.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate. Authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact MPD at 202-727-9099.
