According to the Colorado State Patrol, troopers were dispatched just after 10 a.m. on February 17 to a pileup on southbound I-25 near mile markers 92–94, south of West Pueblo Boulevard and near Stem Beach. Officials confirmed that several semi-trucks were involved in the crash.

Authorities reported four confirmed fatalities and said 29 people were taken to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries has not been fully disclosed.

All lanes of southbound I-25 at milepost 94 and northbound I-25 at milepost 93 were shut down following the crash. Both directions of the interstate remained closed into the afternoon as emergency crews worked the scene. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes and check COtrip.org for updates.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said poor visibility contributed to dangerous driving conditions at the time of the crash. Heavy winds kicked up dust and dirt across the highway corridor, significantly reducing visibility. While an official cause remains under investigation, state officials emphasized that blowing dust and high winds created hazardous travel conditions.

Later Tuesday, CDOT issued a high wind and low-visibility advisory for I-25 from Mile Marker 00 at the New Mexico border to Mile Marker 163 near Monument. Officials warned motorists that even though road surfaces were dry, visibility could become dangerously limited without warning and urged drivers to slow down or avoid travel altogether.

The Pueblo Fire Department confirmed multiple rescue units responded to the scene, along with numerous local and state agencies. The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the response.

Animal Law Enforcement responded after reports that livestock were involved in the crash. Crews worked to safely contain animals that were seen running along the highway following the collision.

The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
