Dump Truck Driver Cited for Unsafe Equipment After Losing Rear Tandem Axle Wheels on Busy Illinois Roadway

ELMHURST, ILLINOIS — A dump truck driver was cited after losing the vehicle's rear tandem axle wheels while driving on a busy Illinois roadway, prompting a lane closure and the towing of the truck.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, February 26, 2026, on southbound Route 83, south of North Avenue in Elmhurst. According to the Elmhurst Police Department, the dump truck lost its rear tandem axle wheels while in motion, forcing authorities to shut down two southbound lanes of Route 83 to manage the scene.

No injuries were reported when the wheel set became detached. The dump truck driver was cited for Unsafe Equipment, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

The Elmhurst Police Department used the incident as an opportunity to remind commercial vehicle operators of their responsibilities. "All commercial motor vehicle operators are responsible for ensuring their trucks are in proper driving condition. Unsafe commercial motor vehicles can be deadly," police said.
