A truck driver reached a plea agreement holding him responsible for the death of a police detective struck by a loose tire.

Detective Ben Campbell was fatally injured on April 3rd, 2019 in Bangor, Maine. 55-year-old truck driver, Scott Willett, reached a plea agreement for the incident this week.

According to US News, Willett was driving his logging truck along Interstate 95 when a tire came loose from his truck. The tire then struck Campbell, who was assisting another driver alongside the interstate. Campbell died as a result of his injuries.

An investigation of the incident focused on the condition of the logging truck. A mechanic who had inspected the truck less than a month earlier had his license suspended as a result on the grounds that his inspection of the rig had been inadequate.
Since then, Willett has been charged with causing the death of a person while committing a traffic infraction, along with several trucking violations and operation of a defective vehicle. He will also have to pay a fine and his license will be suspended. He is due in court on August 19th.
