Illinois State Police (ISP) arrested and charged a CMV driver following the crash death of a parked sheriff’s deputy.

On April 3, 2024, ISP arrested Nathan P. Sweeney, 44, on three counts of Aggravated DUI Causing Death and one count of Reckless Homicide.

The charges were issued following a crash that killed DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Deputy Christina Musil, 35.

The crash occurred at 10:30 p.m. on March 28, 2024.

ISP says that Deputy Musil was inside of a parked police cruiser along the shoulder of Illinois Route 23 south of Perry Road in Waterman when she was struck from the rear by a commercial motor vehicle service truck driven by Sweeney.

Deputy Musil was hospitalized but later succumbed to her injuries.

Shortly after the crash, Sweeney was charged with Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Improper Lane Usage, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

A subsequent investigation determined that Sweeney was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, ISP said in a news release.

Deputy Musil served in the Army National Guard and did a tour in Afghanistan from 2008 — 2009.
