FORT WORTH, Texas — The family of Tiffany Gerred, one of six victims killed in the 133-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 in 2021, is moving forward with a lawsuit against FedEx after reaching a confidential settlement with the North Tarrant Express tollway operator.

The deadly crash occurred on February 11, 2021, during icy road conditions on the TEXPress lanes of I-35W. Gerred, 34, was attempting to move her vehicle away from the growing wreck when a FedEx tractor-trailer struck and crushed her car, causing fatal injuries.

Gerred’s parents and the father of her child filed suit against North Tarrant Express Mobility Partners (NTE) and FedEx, accusing NTE of failing to properly treat the icy roadway and FedEx driver Jean-Marie Saint-Lot of driving too fast for the hazardous conditions.

A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation found that both roadway negligence and excessive speed for conditions contributed to the catastrophic chain-reaction crash, which involved both passenger cars and commercial trucks.

On April 14, 2025, the family reached a confidential settlement with Cintra US, the parent company of NTE, removing the tollway operator from the lawsuit. The family’s legal efforts now shift toward their pending trial against FedEx, which is scheduled to begin June 21.

“While we believe the Toll Road certainly played a part in this tragedy, there is no question that an 18-wheeler is what killed Tiffany,” said Jason Stephens, the family’s attorney. “Six people died that day and all six were hit by 18-wheelers that simply should not have been on the road and who were certainly traveling too fast for the icy conditions.”

Lawsuits filed by other families affected by the pileup remain ongoing.
