Hogs Escape After Tractor Trailer Overturns on Route 40 in Sussex County, Virginia

A tractor-trailer carrying hogs overturned Monday, June 23, on Route 40 in Sussex County, Virginia, resulting in several hogs escaping from the vehicle, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash occurred west of Tyrus Road, when the driver of a 2005 Kenworth W900, hauling livestock for Smithfield Foods, ran off the road and overturned. The driver, Gregory Montez King of Clayton, North Carolina, was not injured, but was charged with failure to maintain lane and failure to maintain proper control of a vehicle.
According to WRIC, some hogs fled the trailer following the crash, while others remained on board. Smithfield Foods personnel are working on-site to recapture the animals and safely transfer them.
The Virginia Department of Transportation implemented a detour at Cabin Stick Road and Courthouse Road, although no major traffic backups were reported.
