A tragic accident occurred early Friday morning, July 11, when a tractor-trailer cab plunged into the Delaware River from the Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Castle County, Delaware.

According to NBC Philadelphia, the incident happened around 3:40 a.m. A Bobtail Tractor was traveling southbound when it crossed three lanes of traffic, struck a concrete pad near the bridge anchorage, and smashed through a concrete wall. The impact caused the cab to fall off the bridge and into the water below.

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Emergency crews responded swiftly, including dive teams and marine units from multiple Delaware agencies, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard. The cab was located underwater around noon, resting in approximately 20 feet of water.

Despite hours of intensive search and recovery efforts, the driver remains missing and is presumed dead. The identity of the individual has not been released, and officials have not confirmed whether more than one person was inside the cab at the time of the accident.

The southbound left lane of the bridge remained closed for several hours but was reopened later in the afternoon. A safety vehicle was positioned near the damaged area as a precautionary measure.
