At Least One Dead After Semi-Truck Hits Disabled Dump Truck and Service Vehicle on I-95 in Cumberland County

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — At least one person was killed Monday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 northbound near mile marker 53 in Cumberland County. The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. near NC-24.
Investigators told Eyewitness News that a disabled dump truck was parked in the breakdown lane with a service truck nearby on the side of the road. A semi-truck sideswiped both vehicles, hitting the mechanic and rear-ending the dump truck. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, though authorities have not yet released their identity.

According ABC11 the driver of the dump truck was trapped inside the cab but was eventually freed and taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with serious injuries. The semi-truck driver has been charged with failure to maintain lanes and death by motor vehicle, and additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
One lane remained closed until around 10 a.m., according to NCDOT.
