HAWTHORNE, New Jersey — A dump truck that ignored posted weight restrictions barreled down Fairview Avenue Wednesday morning, ending in a dramatic crash at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Goffle Hill Road.

The crash occurred on October 29 when the heavy truck, traveling downhill, lost control and struck a utility pole, snapping it in half and bringing down live power lines.

According to officials, the driver self-extricated and was uninjured, and no other vehicles were involved. The impact left debris scattered across the roadway and caused a small electrical fire that the Hawthorne Fire Department quickly extinguished with dry chemical extinguishers.

Crews from PSE&G’s Electric Division responded to replace the destroyed pole and restore power to the area. Nearby wired communications were also affected by the damage.

Authorities reminded drivers that heavy trucks are prohibited from traveling on Fairview Avenue, which is marked with multiple restriction signs.

According to News 12 New Jersey, power restoration efforts are ongoing.
