PORTAGE, Mich. — A freight train collided with a semi-truck Tuesday morning, forcing road closures and damaging multiple railcars, according to the Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS).

The crash happened around 9:23 a.m. in front of 8850 Shaver Road. Officers said the truck driver pulled onto Shaver Road as the train was approaching, and the locomotive struck the trailer, shearing it off and dragging it roughly 1,000 feet before coming to a stop.

Despite the violent impact, no injuries were reported to anyone on the train or inside the semi-truck.

The locomotive and several railcars sustained damage, PDPS said.

Southbound Shaver Road at Melody Avenue was initially shut down, and as of late morning, northbound Shaver Road remains closed. Businesses on the east side of the tracks are “blocked in” and will stay inaccessible for several hours while crews investigate and remove damaged vehicles.

The east side of the railroad is closed from Melody Avenue down to 9151 Shaver Road, according to PDPS.
