COLLIER COUNTY, Florida — One man was killed and multiple people were injured early Friday morning in a seven-vehicle crash involving three semi-trucks on Interstate 75, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision happened around 2 a.m. on December 12 near mile marker 96, where smoke in the area had reduced visibility. Troopers say a commercial semi-truck came to a stop in the travel lane due to the low visibility. A second semi then crashed into the rear of the stopped truck, triggering a chain reaction involving five additional vehicles, including four passenger cars.

A 52-year-old man from Madeira Beach, who was driving a pickup truck involved in the crash, died from his injuries. Two passengers in the pickup — a 38-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy — suffered serious injuries and were transported to a hospital.

A 49-year-old man from Coral Springs, driving an Audi, sustained minor injuries and was also hospitalized.

Troopers said the drivers of the remaining vehicles were not injured and no additional passengers were reported.

All lanes of I-75 were reopened by 9:45 a.m., but the crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
