Connecticut State Police said the crash, involving a tractor-trailer, happened before 7 a.m. and initially no injuries were reported. Troopers urged motorists to use alternate routes and expect delays as crews worked the scene.

The North Stonington Volunteer Fire Co. said the crash involved an oil tanker and noted it occurred in the southbound lanes, though additional details about how the tanker overturned were not immediately released.

State police said the scene was cleared by mid-afternoon.

Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) spokesperson Bill Flood said the agency’s Emergency Response Unit responded and confirmed the truck lost about 300 gallons of hydraulic fluid. Flood said the tanker was carrying 2,300 gallons total spread across eight separate tanks. DEEP staff applied cover clamps to accessible tanks to help prevent additional releases.

Flood said an environmental contractor was hired to offload remaining product and begin remediation of the spill area.
