Trucker in steel-coil wreck was ran off road, didn’t realize someone had been killed, 911 call reveals

The truck driver involved in a recent wreck that sent a steel coil smashing into a nearby car didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation, a 911 call reveals. 

The Wednesday accident began when a Total Package Express Inc truck hauling steel coils north on Highway 127 was ran off the road and into the grass by a motorist. The trucker then stopped his rig and got out to speak with the motorist, but there seemed to be a language barrier, and that’s when the trucker noticed he was missing a large steel coil from his trailer, reported the Springfield News-Sun.

“I am on 127 north of Hamilton. I am in a big truck. I haul steel and one of my coils came off my trailer,” the truck driver told dispatchers on a 911 call. He said he was about an eighth of a mile from where the coil fell but wasn’t sure of it’s exact location. 

“Traffic is stopped back there so it must be in the road. Nobody is injured or anything, but it came out of my trailer.”

At the same time, another 911 call came in from a motorist reporting that “there has been a bad accident, there is debris all the road,” the woman told dispatchers. “I don’t even know what they hit.”

The person killed in the accident has not yet been identified.
