HINCKLEY, OHIO — A semi-truck trailer carrying liquid propane gas rolled down a hill Thursday afternoon in Hinckley after separating from its tractor, prompting a lengthy hazmat response and an hours-long road closure.

Hinckley Fire and Police were dispatched around 1:37 p.m. to the 100 block of Center Road for reports that a trailer had come loose from the tractor and rolled downhill, striking a ditch and another commercial vehicle. As crews were responding, they learned the trailer was a fully loaded 8,700-gallon liquid propane gas tanker, and the Medina County All Hazards Haz-Mat Team was requested.

Once on scene, Center Road was shut down in both directions to establish a safety perimeter. Fire officials said personnel began air monitoring to confirm there was no propane release, and monitoring continued throughout the operation.

Because of the tanker’s position and condition, crews conducted a controlled product transfer of the propane before attempting to upright and remove the trailer. Officials said the tanker was safely removed and the roadway reopened at 10:15 p.m., after about 8.5 hours of on-scene operations.

No injuries were reported, and officials confirmed there was no release of hazardous materials.

Assisting agencies included the Ohio State Highway Patrol, OSHP Motor Carrier Enforcement, Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, Cleveland Metroparks Police Department, Richfield Police Department, Rich’s Towing, World Truck Towing, Propane Fabricators of Hinckley, Ohio Department of Transportation, Medina County All Hazards Team, and the Medina County Emergency Management Agency.

The OSHP Medina Post is handling the crash investigation, which remains ongoing.
