FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA — Burning trash was dumped onto westbound Route 50 Thursday morning after a garbage truck caught fire near South Penderbrook Drive, prompting lane closures and major delays during the commute, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 11:37 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, for the vehicle fire along Route 50. Officials said crews extinguished the flames by offloading the burning trash onto the roadway, a move made to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the truck and further into the roadway.

Crews remained on scene to knock down hotspots in the debris and begin cleanup operations, while the right lanes of Route 50 westbound were closed to traffic.

No injuries were reported.

Drivers were urged to expect delays in the area as crews worked to clear the roadway and reopen lanes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
