The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is warning drivers to use extra caution after a turkey strike sent a semi truck driver to the hospital last week.

The incident took place on March 13, 2024, in Jasper County, Missouri.

According to local outlet KOAM, a semi truck traveling on eastbound I-44 at mile marker 29 struck a turkey.

The bird went directly through the windshield, striking Texas-based truck driver Kevin Battaglia, 63.

The semi truck crashed off of the interstate into the median, striking a cable barrier.

Battaglia was transported to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

No other vehicles were involved.

MSHP warned drivers to be aware of possible bird strikes:

With turkey season just around the corner, it’s important to remember that big birds will be on the move. It’s also important to keep your eyes constantly scanning outside while driving. This is what happens when a turkey hits a windshield at highway speeds.
