RYE, New York — A tri-axle commercial vehicle hauling asphalt was taken off the road after 17 separate violations were discovered during a Level I inspection conducted by the City of Rye Police Department on September 26th.

The inspection took place near Playland Access Drive and Theodore Fremd Avenue, where an officer observed that the truck was missing both the Highway Use Tax (HUT) decal and the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) decal, prompting a traffic stop.

According to MyRye.com, the violations were severe:

  • The truck was operating at 73,250 pounds, well over the legal weight limit of 56,000 pounds.

  • Safety inspections revealed two inoperative brakes and one brake system out of adjustment, resulting in 50% of the braking capacity being defective.

  • Other violations included various safety and regulatory issues, totaling 17 citations in the NYS DOT report.

Due to the dangerous condition of the vehicle, RJB Towing was called to remove it from the scene. The driver was also cited, although their identity has not been released.

Authorities emphasized that inspections like this are part of proactive enforcement measures aimed at keeping unsafe commercial vehicles off New York’s roadways.
