NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A semi-truck driver was killed late Monday night after his load of steel beams shifted during sudden braking and tore through the cab of his truck on Interstate 24 West near the I-40 split, according to Metro Nashville Police.

Just before midnight, traffic ahead of the semi slowed abruptly, causing the driver to hit the brakes hard. Investigators say the trailer was hauling two large steel beams that surged forward under the force of braking and penetrated the cab, fatally injuring the driver.

The truck then rolled to a stop against the left retaining wall. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Bolton James Harry-Algeo of Barron, Wisconsin, died at the scene.

No additional details have been released and the investigation remains ongoing.
