COLORADO — The Colorado State Patrol is reminding commercial vehicle drivers of the serious consequences of excessive speeding after issuing 463 citations for driving 15 mph or more over the speed limit in 2025 — the highest number recorded in the last five years.

The warning comes as CSP launches a three-month "Stop Speeding" campaign, during which troopers are taking a low-tolerance approach to the top fatal crash factors, including lane violations and speeding.

Under Colorado law, professional drivers face a 60-day license suspension if they commit two serious traffic violations within three years while operating a commercial motor vehicle. A third violation within three years triggers a 120-day suspension. Serious traffic violations include excessive speeding of 15 mph or more over the limit, improper lane changes, reckless driving, and following too closely.

"An 80,000-lb semi-truck traveling at 65 mph needs over 525 feet, nearly two football fields, to stop under ideal conditions," said Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. "When a CMV driver chooses to exceed this speed limit, they are expanding their margin for error and posing a hazard to everyone else sharing the road with them."

The roadways where CSP issued the highest number of citations in 2025 were I-70, Highway 160, and Highway 287 — a ranking that remained consistent across all five years of data reviewed. The counties with the most citations issued in 2025 were Summit County with 272, Eagle County with 95, and Jefferson County with 30.
