SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, California — A semi-truck driver was arrested on Highway 101 near Avila Beach after a traffic stop for speeding led to the discovery of an alleged third DUI offense, along with the use of false identification to conceal a lifetime commercial license suspension, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers stopped the commercial vehicle earlier this month after observing it traveling at an unsafe speed. During the stop, troopers said the driver displayed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

During the booking process at the San Luis Obispo County Jail, investigators determined the driver had provided a false or stolen identification at the scene. Once his true identity was confirmed, CHP learned the driver had two prior DUI convictions involving commercial vehicles and was already under a lifetime suspension of his commercial driver’s license.

As a result, the driver now faces a third DUI charge in a commercial vehicle, along with additional charges related to speeding, false identification, and driving while suspended, according to CHP.

The incident remains under investigation according to the California Highway Patrol.
