LINN, TEXAS — Texas authorities have identified the tractor-trailer driver killed in a fiery crash Tuesday afternoon in Hidalgo County as Alberto Montoya, 74, of Brownsville, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Texas DPS said the crash happened at about 12:32 p.m. on FM 186 east of U.S. 281, a key roadway connecting Linn in Hidalgo County to Raymondville and Port Mansfield in Willacy County. Investigators said Montoya was driving eastbound on FM 186 when the tractor-trailer veered off the roadway into a bar ditch, then struck a light pole and a tree.

DPS said the impact caused the tractor-trailer to catch fire, and Montoya was burned beyond recognition.

TxDOT is assisting with traffic control, and both directions of FM 186 are closed from U.S. 281 to west of Brushline Road while crews work the scene. DPS said the roadway is expected to remain closed for several more hours, with an estimated reopening time of around 10 p.m. Officials urged drivers to slow down and avoid the area if possible.
